The Casamari Abbey and the Abbey of Montecassino

The itinerary starts with a visit to the Abbey of Casamari, in the province of Frosinone, an important historical, cultural and spiritual centre of Lazio. It recalls the great French monasteries, with internal garden, quadrangular cloister, church with three naves and exudes interior strength and simplicity.

The abbey of Casamari has become the seat of various activities over time; the monks in fact combine prayer with various activities such as the management of the famous and refined pharmacy, liquor, book restoration, library and the recent archaeological museum with finds from the Roman era.

The monks of Casamari celebrate all their liturgy in Gregorian chant.

Transfer by bus to the splendid Abbey of Montecassino. Here, throughout the Middle Ages until 1300, the years of greatest splendour and fervour, the Cassina monks practiced medicine, music, philosophical sciences, translating the works of antiquity from Latin and Greek.

By visiting the Abbey Museum, you can fully understand the cultural role played by this place throughout the history of Europe. It contains precious illuminated codes, literary texts and documents.

The guided tour includes the illustration of the cloisters, of the Basilica and exceptionally, also of the Cell of St. Benedict, in the ancient and underground part of the monastery. Here you can still admire the ancient Roman and medieval walls, the great Staircase of the Epigraphs and the Rock of Miracles, survived the terrible bombing of 1944.

The visit will begin at about 15:00 and will end in the Basilica with the Vespers in Gregorian chant.
