Matera The Enchanted History
Meeting with the guide in the evening, for a pleasant walk in the city center, whom will recount the origins of Matera and its characteristics, while admiring the main churches, such as the beautiful St. Francis of Assisi and the majestic Cathedral at the top of Civita, the highest spur that divides in two the “Sassi di Matera”.
This is how the ancient houses of Matera are called, carved into the soft rock, an incredible rocky landscape where the houses have perfectly integrated into nature.
Once the heart of rural civilization, today, restructured and ennobled, the Sassi will leave you breathless especially in the evening, when the small and balmy lights of residences, artisan workshops and restaurants make the entire place look like an enchanted nativity scene.
Stop in Piazzetta Pascoli, near the splendid Belvedere, for a complete panoramic view, with the most suggestive and romantic views.
Dinner and overnight stay.
The next morning, we will descend with the guide into the heart of the Sassi, mostly carved into the rock, a sort of deep canyon with breathtaking views.
Here you will discover the true history of the Sassi, ancient buildings, and their social characteristics, with a visit to a typical “cave house”, carved into the rock, the only environment for people and animals, furnished with tools, utensils and original furniture, for an exciting discovery of what used to be the daily routine in the past.
Next visit to a rocky church, still a cave today, but assigned to religious purposes, decorated with architectural details and extraordinary parietal frescoes dating back to the seventh century.
A route through the most characteristic alleys of the Sassi, among glimpses and small squares where you can enjoy the magic of a real nativity scene that narrates centuries of history.
